The football world has been left in shock after Ethan McLeod, a 21-year-old footballer and former Premier League academy prospect, tragically lost his life in a devastating road accident.
The fatal crash occurred on a motorway as the young player was returning home after a match. McLeod, who was playing for Macclesfield FC at the time of his death, previously developed through the youth academy of Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he was regarded as a highly promising striker.
According to available information, McLeod was driving his Mercedes at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a motorway safety barrier. Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene, but doctors were only able to pronounce him dead.
Macclesfield FC confirmed the tragic news in an official statement, revealing that McLeod had been travelling home following his team’s 2–1 victory over Bedford Town.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts and complete disbelief that Macclesfield FC can confirm the passing of our 21-year-old striker, Ethan McLeod. He was an extremely talented and much-loved member of the first team, with his whole life and career ahead of him,” the club said.
McLeod spent ten years at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy and also gained experience on loan at Alvechurch. He later played for Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield.
Following the crash, the affected stretch of motorway was closed for more than eight hours. While the investigation is ongoing, Northamptonshire Police confirmed that only one vehicle was involved in the incident.
