A major new study has provided the clearest picture yet of the long-term health outcomes for people who received Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
The vaccines were introduced worldwide as an emergency response to reduce severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths caused by Covid-19. While millions lined up at vaccination centers, the speed of development and rollout also fueled concerns about potential long-term side effects.
Now, several years after the height of the pandemic, researchers have been able to assess real-world outcomes on an unprecedented scale.
The French study analyzed health data from approximately 28 million people aged 18 to 59, making it the largest long-term study of Covid-19 vaccination outcomes to date.
Using data from the French National Health Data System, researchers examined:
22.7 million individuals who received at least one vaccine dose between May and October 2021
5.9 million individuals who remained unvaccinated as of November 1, 2021
Both groups were followed for an average of around 45 months.
The results showed that vaccinated individuals experienced significantly better health outcomes overall.
According to the study:
Covid-19 vaccination reduced the risk of death from Covid-19 by 74 percent
The overall risk of death from any cause was reduced by 25 percent among vaccinated individuals compared to those who were unvaccinated
Researchers noted that while protection against Covid-19 itself was expected, the reduction in overall mortality was particularly noteworthy.
The study suggests that Covid-19 can trigger serious secondary conditions, including infections, cardiovascular complications, and other long-term health issues.
By lowering the risk of severe Covid-19 illness, vaccination also appears to reduce the likelihood of developing these secondary complications. This effect is especially important for vulnerable groups, including those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), more than 976 million Covid-19 vaccine doses had been administered across Europe by February 2023.
Although mass vaccination campaigns have largely ended, seasonal booster doses continue to be administered to tens of millions of people worldwide.
Researchers emphasize that the scale and duration of the study provide strong evidence supporting the long-term safety and benefits of Covid-19 vaccination.
