Rob Reiner, the celebrated actor, filmmaker and cultural icon whose work shaped generations of moviegoers, has died at the age of 78. His death was announced on Sunday by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Authorities said the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating an apparent homicide at the home he shared with his wife, Michele.

Reiner first rose to national fame in the 1970s as Michael “Meathead” Stivic, Archie Bunker’s outspoken son-in-law on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family. His performance earned him two Emmy Awards and made him one of television’s most recognizable faces.

After his success as an actor, Reiner reinvented himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and respected directors. Over the following decades, he directed an extraordinary run of genre-defining films, including the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (1984), the coming-of-age drama Stand by Me (1986), the fantasy classic The Princess Bride (1987), the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally… (1989) and the courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992).

Reiner demonstrated a rare ability to move effortlessly between satire, romance, drama and comedy. Speaking to The New York Times after the release of The Princess Bride, he said the film’s mix of tones reflected different sides of his own personality, blending humor, romance and realism.

Born into a family deeply rooted in entertainment, Reiner was the son of legendary comedian and writer Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and actress and singer Estelle Reiner. Inspired by acting classes in high school, he began performing in small theaters before landing the role that would define his early career.

During his eight years on All in the Family from 1971 to 1978, Reiner also gained experience behind the scenes, spending time in the writers’ room and learning the craft of directing. His long-held ambition to direct came to fruition in 1984 with This Is Spinal Tap, which went on to become a cult classic.

In his personal life, Reiner married actress and director Penny Marshall in 1971. Following their divorce, his experiences dating inspired the idea for When Harry Met Sally…, written by Nora Ephron and starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The film became one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time. While working on the movie, Reiner met photographer Michele Singer, whom he married in 1989. He later said falling in love with her led him to change the film’s ending.

Throughout the 1990s, Reiner continued directing major hits, including Misery, A Few Good Men and The American President. He remained active as an actor as well, appearing in films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, the sitcom New Girl and, most recently, a cameo in The Bear.

Reiner was also deeply involved in politics, becoming a prominent liberal activist and outspoken Democrat. He supported causes ranging from early childhood education to same-sex marriage and was a vocal critic of the Trump administration. Following news of his death, numerous political figures, including former President Barack Obama, paid tribute to his legacy.

Rob Reiner is survived by his wife Michele, their three children — Jake, Nick and Romy — and his adopted daughter Tracy Reiner, an actress known for roles in A League of Their Own and Apollo 13.

In one of his final interviews, Reiner reflected on what mattered most to him in life. “My wife and kids,” he said. “Nobody on their death bed ever says, ‘I should have spent more time at the office.’”
