Vučić Allegedly Tried to Drag Trump Family Into Corruption Scandal, Project Collapses

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has reportedly attempted to involve the Trump family in a controversial real estate project on the site of the former Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) General Staff in Belgrade, using legal maneuvering that critics describe as deeply problematic and potentially corrupt.

According to available information, the Trump family recognized the risks associated with the project and withdrew in time, avoiding entanglement in what has become a serious legal and political controversy. While Serbia’s Prosecutor’s Office has already filed indictments related to the case, the broader geopolitical and economic consequences remain significant.

Vučić himself previously claimed that the project would have brought €1.5 billion in investment to Serbia. Such an amount represents a major capital inflow, particularly for Serbia’s economy. However, the manner in which the project was pursued sent a damaging signal to international investors, reinforcing perceptions of Serbia as an unreliable and legally unstable investment environment.

The economic fallout is also reflected in declining public trust in Serbia’s financial stability, with reports of increased conversion of Serbian dinars into euros as citizens seek to protect their savings amid growing uncertainty.

Relations between Serbia and the United States remain complex, marked by a deep divide between public opinion and the policies of Vučić’s government. For nearly three decades, Vučić has been a central figure in shaping a political narrative critical of the West, particularly the U.S., a stance that now appears to be backfiring.

When the idea of handing over the General Staff site to the Trump family emerged, it faced not only legal challenges and lawsuits but also strong public resistance. Many Serbian citizens, shaped by decades of anti-American rhetoric, rejected the project outright, further complicating Vučić’s position.

This controversy comes amid mounting pressure on the Serbian government, including sanctions targeting the Serbian oil industry, an ongoing energy crisis, persistent street protests, and repeated clashes between police and demonstrators. Vučić’s absence from a much-publicized meeting with European leaders in Brussels has further fueled speculation about Serbia’s deteriorating standing on the international stage.

Critics argue that Serbia has not only failed to make progress but has regressed in key areas such as freedom of speech, the rule of law, and overall economic security.

An increasing number of analysts believe that Vučić’s political future is nearing its end, with his exit from power appearing increasingly inevitable. The only remaining question, they argue, is whether that transition will occur through elections or through intensified public unrest.

What is already clear, however, is that Aleksandar Vučić has suffered a major loss of credibility—both domestically and internationally.
