Authorities have identified the two people killed in Saturday’s shooting at Brown University as students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. The shooting occurred inside a classroom on the university’s campus in Rhode Island on Saturday evening, leaving at least nine other people wounded.

As of Monday morning, no suspect has been publicly identified. However, the university stated that local police do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown University or the surrounding community.

Ella Cook

Ella Cook was a sophomore from Alabama, according to Alabama Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth, who confirmed her identity in a post on X. Cook served as vice president of Brown University’s College Republicans, the College Republicans of America said.

“Ella was a devoted Christian and a committed conservative who represented the very best of Alabama,” Ainsworth wrote. “A bright future was ended much too soon.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also paid tribute, writing: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents. God please bless them.”

CBS affiliate WIAT reported that Cook was a member of Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham. During a Sunday service, the church confirmed her death and described her as a deeply faithful and generous presence within the community.

“She was an incredibly grounded, generous, and faithful bright light, here at the Advent for many years,” a church spokesperson said.

U.S. Senator Katie Boyd Britt stated that she and her husband joined “the Mountain Brook community and all of Alabama in mourning the heartbreaking loss of one of our own.” Mountain Brook is a suburb of Birmingham.

Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov

The American Uzbekistan Association confirmed that Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov was also killed in the shooting.

“Mukhammad Aziz was known for his sharp intellect, kind heart, and quiet willingness to help anyone in need,” the organization said in a statement. “He carried himself with humility and compassion, earning the respect and affection of those around him.”

The group added that his life was filled with promise and that his death has left an immeasurable void in the Uzbek American community.

Umurzokov’s roommate said he was studying neuroscience and described him as extremely intelligent and full of joy.

“He was kind. He reached out to me as soon as we got roommate assignments,” freshman Khimari Manns told CBS News Boston. “Whatever you asked him to do, he was always there for you.”

Manns added that the entire campus is grieving, saying the loss of Umurzokov would be deeply felt throughout the Brown University community.

U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick also expressed condolences, calling Umurzokov’s death tragic and saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of such a promising young life.
